Hi Everyone,

Some of you may know me from my earlier posts at cTrader forums ( https://ctrader.com/algos/cbots/show/1026 ) and may have used my bots/trading algorithms or helped me in my coding or were simply interested in my approach to trading.

I have now been trading for several years with general inquisitiveness for new and innovative ways of trading and have been fortunate to have garnered some success along the way.

I have recently started exploring quantamental (quantitative + fundamental) approach to trading and have developed a trading algorithm which I have been testing/refining in real-time for a while. I am using sentiment analysis and calling it the fundamental part of the algorithm. Due to the non-availability of historical fundamental data, I have to test this algorithm in walk forward way. I am starting an experiment to post my trading signals on Twitter in real-time via my cBot. Below are the main points of this exercise:

1)  August 2020 will be the main public experimentation month for the algorithm and the aim is to refine the signals and particularly develop risk management around it.

 

2)  I will focus on 5 major Index CFDs initially and then will see how it evolves.

     AUS200: Index CFD representing https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/AS51:IND

     HK50: Index CFD representing https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/HSI:IND

     DE30: Index CFD representing https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/DAX:IND

     US30: Index CFD representing https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/INDU:IND

     UK100: Index CFD representing https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/UKX:IND

 

3)  There can be only 1 trade per product per day (unless I have made a coding error).

 

4)  Initial risk management approach->

         Take Profit : 10bps

         StopLoss : based on Daily ATR

         Exit : End of Day (if neither TP nor SL gets hit during day)

   ** Day is defined as -> 00:00 UTC – 21:00 UTC

Note: I am aware of pretty skewed risk-reward and thus this strategy is not suitable for everyone but I need to refine it and this exercise should help me do that.

 

5)  Every trade signal will be published real-time with Time stamp, Product, Direction, Bid/Ask (at the time), Take Profit and Stop Loss.

     For example: Sell Signal generated at 24/07/2020 10:06:49 UTC for UK100 at Bid/Ask Price: 6152.5 / 6153.6 [ TP: 6146.35 , SL: 6252.6 , Exit: EoD ]

 

6)  There will be End of Month report (starting from August month) with analysis of all trades taken with the Trades generated, Entry Price, Close Price, %Profit Generated, and other key performance indicators. For reporting purpose, I would assume account balance of 20K USD with 20K USD equivalent risk exposure on each product taken in each suggested trade and   returns will be generated accordingly. This would mean our portfolio max risk exposure will be 100K on any day if one trade is generated on each of the 5 Index CFDs. We can define better risk-management using those trades data and potentially explore other TP/SL/Exit options.

 

7)  For August Month, I would look at tick level data to generate the report and expected exit prices accordingly.  I will implement in September trade taking capacity in cBot (not just signal    generation) with TP/SL so that it becomes fully automated algorithmic trading strategy.

 

8)  Reasons to do this exercise:

  1. Advice/help/suggestions to refine it.
  2. Make myself disciplined with this strategy with more eyes looking at it critically.
  3. Ability to create a trading signal without any unnecessary clutter of charts & essay on the analysis of trade and with clear simple executable trading signals with auditable/transparent record.

Ok so here we are after 1 month for Aug model performance. So far so good I must say, no major glitches and I was able to collect data neatly. Only 1 trade didn't hit TP by end of day so that was a victory and total 20 trades done for the month. I like at-least 30-35 samples so will do this exercise for another month.

So here are the key performance metrics and possible risk management/models

I am taking next week off as I am on holidays  , so none of my trading algorithms will be running including this TwitterBot !

I am calling this month end now and will publish end-of-month performance report and will resume from 6th Oct .

Sep month has gone by with 23 trades and thus we got a good sample of 43 trades in 2 months. All of them hit TP in this month and returns are really good except Model_2 which I will be removing from results going forward. Default Model_1 has given 2.3% returns and rest of the alternate models/risk management schemes has been profitable as well with good risk-reward. Please see performance report below :

If you remove Model_2 from last 2 months, then performance looks much better :

October month finally ended with high volatility in last few sessions due to ongoing worsening situation of COVID in EU/UK while US presidential elections are bringing new waves of uptick in vol.

October was a tough month for the model and few bad trades did the damage ( Already known and well aware due to skewed risk reward in my model which I had already highlighted ). In any case default model (Model_1) posted 48bps profit while all models in total gave us 1.95%. I would still call it a win

 Thanks for the code for Telegram mate but it is too complicated for me :) . Btw I already got a channel where bot posts the trades. I am still thinking if I should make it public or private (premium paid service). Haven't decided on anything yet regarding commercializing my algorithm (if at all I do). Performance report for April 2021: [ What a month , no activity in first half and then last week made most out of it  ]

Cracking +5.48% across all models in April 2021 with +13.08% so far this year with another 24.22% last year (Aug-Dec 2020). Total 37.3% in 9 months is nothing but impressive, and that too with full transparency unlike anyone on public space is commendable in my opinion ! [ https://twitter.com/TMeanreversion ]

2 consecutive losing trades in 2 days as didn't hit TP   uff...but it is part and parcel of trading so let's hope it doesn't worsen from here. May month results aren't going to be good it seems. ( but hey we are still doing pretty good since inception of Aug 2020 !! )

A last few losing trades in May pushed us lower for the month and resulted in first -ive month in last 10 months !! Still +10.3% for 2021 and +34.27% since Aug 2020. Losses are part and parcel of trading so it is good to see some losses as well .

After our first losing month in May, June 2021 came out better even though with limited activity due to low market volatility. We saw +0.32% in June with total returns in 2021 reaching at +10.37% ! ( +34.59% since Aug 2020 ).
